Case Study
Beauty Products in Taiwan
In turn, CBI systematically investigated over 200 retail outlets throughout Taiwan, compiling a mass of data that resulted in the discovery of three large factories in Central Taiwan. The three factories were responsible for the majority of our client’s counterfeit problem in-country.
CBI raided each retail outlet and served store owners with Cease & Desist Letters, asking them each to sign an Undertaking specifying a monetary fine if they were found in the counterfeit business again.
Some outlets agreed to sign immediately—others negotiated a smaller fine. Many store owners feigned ignorance, claiming they were unaware that their products were counterfeit. Those individuals were essentially forced to sign, lest they admit knowledge that their products were counterfeit.
Six months later, CBI revisited the raided targets. Approximately 90% of the stores were only stocking genuine products.Fines were levied on the remaining 10% still selling counterfeit goods, enough to cover costs for the entire program.
In the end, CBI netted over US$1 million in counterfeit products and machinery. To this day, the client has yet to find any more counterfeit products in Taiwan.
